A Legacy of Exploration – Celebrating 130 Years

This year, HX marks 130 years of expedition travel, celebrating a legacy that began on 8 July 1896, when the steamship DS Lofoten sailed from Hammerfest, Norway, to the High Arctic: Svalbard.

More than a century later, HX continues to lead the way in expedition cruising, inspiring travellers to discover some of the world’s most remote and extraordinary destinations. Rooted in Norwegian heritage and driven by a pioneering spirit, HX remains committed to taking guests beyond the ordinary through authentic exploration.

Today, HX continues to:

• Advance responsible expedition travel with hybrid-powered ships, the elimination of single-use plastics, and partnerships with leading conservation organisations.
• Expand globally, from Antarctica to Greenland, Svalbard to the Galápagos and destinations in between.
• Offer immersive experiences that connect guests with nature and science, from tracking whales and glacial research to supporting onboard citizen science initiatives.

This anniversary celebrates 130 years of changing the way people see the world.
