Hurtigruten has sailed the Norwegian coast since 1893, when Richard With's steamship first carried mail and passengers north from Trondheim. Its ships still call at dozens of small harbours between Bergen and Kirkenes, carrying local travellers and cargo alongside holidaymakers. It is a relaxed, unpretentious way to watch fjords, fishing villages and Arctic landscapes pass by, day after day.
Besides the classic Coastal Express, Hurtigruten runs all-inclusive Signature voyages on refurbished ships to the North Cape and Svalbard. Menus lean on Norwegian produce, an onboard Expedition Team gives talks, and in winter the ships sail deep into the aurora zone. Several ships now use battery-hybrid power, and a zero-emission ship is planned for 2030.
